Hlungwani Backs Chiefs Penalty Decision Despite Controversy

Former PSL referee Victor Hlungwani has defended the penalty awarded to Kaizer Chiefs during their recent 2-1 loss to Golden Arrows, stating that referee Luxolo Badi made the correct call.

The penalty, given in the 10th minute after Glody Lilepo was fouled, sparked debate as many felt the contact was minimal. Chiefs captain Yusuf Maart subsequently missed the spot-kick, compounding their woes in a match that resulted in their 10th league defeat of the season.

Hlungwani, speaking on Soccerzone, clarified the decision, explaining that while the initial hand contact on Lilepo's back was inconsequential, the decisive foul occurred on the ground.

"He [Lilepo] gets into the box and then there’s a hand that goes to the back," Hlungwani stated. "Remember, we said the hand must have an impact. Now, there’s a hand that goes to the back. Does it have an impact, the answer is no! But let’s look on the ground. On the ground that’s where the impact comes in where it prevented him from moving forward. So, therefore correct decision by referee Badi to give a penalty in this situation."

This verdict from Hlungwani aims to settle the controversy surrounding the penalty, even as Kaizer Chiefs grapple with their disappointing league form.
