The family of Joseph Maimela, a grade 12 student from Kgabo Secondary School in Mokgokong village, Limpopo, is demanding answers from the Department of Education following his suicide in October of last year. They allege that bullying by teachers, including the public sharing of his progress report, contributed to his death.

Annah Maimela, Joseph’s sister, expressed frustration with the department's lack of communication regarding their internal investigation. "Our biggest concern is that the department has not provided us with any feedback or updates," she stated in an interview with SABC News. "We buried our child in October, yet they never came to talk to us or provide updates on progress." The family has sought legal counsel due to the department's perceived lack of transparency.

In response, Limpopo education department spokesperson Mike Maringa confirmed that an investigation has been conducted and concluded. "The case is in its final stages at the head office," Maringa said. He added that disciplinary measures will follow, but the parties involved have yet to be formally informed.

Basic Education Department spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga highlighted the broader issue of youth suicide in South Africa. He referenced health department data showing that 7,426 children under 18 were treated for attempted suicide between April and December 2023. "This concerning data highlights the need for comprehensive and coordinated efforts to address mental health challenges and prevent suicide among young people," Mhlanga stated.

The Maimela family continues to seek accountability and transparency from the Department of Education, emphasizing the urgent need for action to prevent similar tragedies.
